Usage of vegetative cultures for biogas production became a new direction in European agriculture. More and more cultivation areas are used for energy crops that are suitable for biogas production. If company doesn’t have any waste products but has lands and energy demand it can use renewable energy sources.

From gas yield point of view plants can give one of the highest biogas yield. Almost any green or ensilaged plant is suitable for biogas production. From the economic feasibility point of view the following plants are most applicable for biogas production: corn silage of milky and waxy ripeness, Sudan grass, poic silage, mixture of clover with other grasses, grains silage, sugar and fodder beet with tops, potato, grains.

Today corn silage is most effective raw material for biogas production. This plant gives good crop yield from hectare as well as biogas yield from 1 ton of raw material. Corn silage production costs are not very high and farming machines for its cultivation available almost at any farm.

Energy crop rotations are practiced in Europe, it means that one energy crop replaced by another enabling get green biomass twice a year, suppress weeds growth and save costs. Two cultures can be grown simultaneously, for example corn and sunflower or corn and millet grass. That method increases nutrients content and stabilizes crop yield during dry seasons.

Fertilizer expenses are very low due to usage of high quality fertilizer produced by biogas plant.

Peculiarities

Due to high dry matter contend bioreactor feeding unit is not equipped with pumps. Screw charger are used for this material the transported to the screw charger by tractor and fed into bioreactor by portions.

For maximum biogas yield fermentation takes place in two bioreactors. The second one is called after-fermentation reactor and is also equipped with heating system, control gauges, gasholder with inflatable dome.

Usage of energy crops gives high biogas yield that can be used for electricity and heat production in co-generation unit. As an option the gas can be treated up to biomethane and used as a vehicle fuel.
